What: "Alpha particles are helium nuclei denuded of electrons -- which as they travel rip off the electons of other atoms and molecules. Unlike Beta particles which are small like electrons, the Alpha particles are bigger and can knock molecules apart, sometimes causing birth defects. If the Beta particla is like a bee-bee or a pea, the alpha particle is like a wrecking ball."
